Descriptions

An Earlham education has never been so relevant and necessary as it is today. The problems of our time don’t come in neat packages. They’re complex and urgent, and they will only be solved through courageous, curious and innovative thinking. That’s where Earlhamites come in. Since our founding in 1847, Earlham has built a collaborative, global learning community. Through dialogue and action, this community inspires and motivates, demands and supports, and provides transformative opportunities and experiences. Earlham changes students, and those students change the world. Earlham has always been a community committed to doing good and pursuing truth. Founded in 1847 by Quakers who moved north in an effort to avoid participating in a slave society, Earlhamites strive to do what’s right. We’re a community that embraces people of all faiths and no faith. Today, only a small percentage of our students and faculty identify as Quaker—but our Quaker heritage is alive and well, including through the Principles and Practices that guide how we interact as a community and an institution. These values—respect for persons, integrity, peace and justice, simplicity, and community—serve as the foundation for how we live and learn together. Our commitment to one another and to the world endures—for good.
