Simon Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics (KhNU of Economics) is the biggest economic education centre in the city of Kharkiv and one of the best economic higher education institutions in Ukraine. Simon Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics (KhNU of Economics), the successor of Kharkiv Engineering and Economics Institute (KhEEI), was founded on October 22, 1930 on the basis of the Industrial Faculty of Kharkiv National Economy Institute. According to the results of state accreditation in 1994 KhEEI was renamed Kharkiv State University of Economics. The President Decree, dated August 21, 2004 granted the University the National status. Today KhNU of Economics is one of the highly reputable Ukrainian higher educational establishments in the field of economics. Having the three-year experience in the implementation of the independent student assessment system, in 2005 KhNU of Economics became the first higher education institution in Ukraine, in which the Republican Center of Testing Technologies conducted independent enrollee testing. The education process is provided by the faculty of 735 lecturers, 60 Doctors of Science and 438 Candidates of Science among them. Seven faculties function in the University (Faculty of Economy and Law, Faculty of Economic Informatics, Faculty of Management and Marketing, Faculty of International Economic Relations, Faculty of Consulting and International Business, Finance Faculty, Faculty of Training Foreign Citizens) as well as Correspondence and Distance Education Department, Post-Graduate and Doctoral schools, specialized academic councils, research and learning laboratories. Within the framework of cooperation with the University of Cambridge, exams for Business English Certificates (BEC) have been held since 2010. So far, 198 lecturers and 260 students have successfully passed this exam and have been awarded BEC certificates. KhNU of Economics obtained the status of the Independent BEC Candidate Training Centre of the University of Cambridge. The history of Kharkiv National University of Economics closely connected with the special institutions of business education, which were founded in Kharkiv during the rapid economic rise of late XIX – early XX century. At that time the city was the center of a huge territory, which had a semi-official name of the South of Russia. In the economic sense, it was a new industrial region, where the sector of mining and heavy industry were dynamically developing. In 1888, at the initiative of Kharkiv businessman merchant Commerce Adviser M. Orlov the Kharkiv Commercial College was founded, it was opened in 1893, and in 1896 it was given the name of Emperor Alexander III.
