The Vitebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the field of Veterinary Medicine in Belarus, and it has its long and exciting history. At the All-Belarusian Congress of Veterinarians on June 27, 1924 a proposal was made to organize a veterinary higher education establishment in Vitebsk. The proposal found support in governmental structures and Vitebsk Veterinary Institute was founded on the basis of the agrarian technical school aiming at rearing the national system of veterinary higher education in Belarus. The opening ceremony of Vitebsk Veterinary Institute took place on November 8, 1924. And the first academic year in the history of Vitebsk Veterinary Institute started on November 24, 1924 with a hundred of students and eleven lecturers. Soon after the inauguration of the Institute, the first veterinary journals, manuals, guides, monographs on almost all topical issues of veterinary and animal husbandry began to be published. A significant role in the formation of veterinary education in Belarus, organization of the educational process and development of material and technical base of Vitebsk Veterinary Institute was played by its rectors.
