Western Oregon is an Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution, the only four-year, public university in Oregon to have achieved the designation. Western Oregon University is among the most affordable of Oregon public universities and features a wide range of practical, career-focused academy. It was originally established in 1856 by Oregon pioneers as Monmouth University. Subsequent names included Oregon State Normal School, Oregon College of Education, and Western Oregon State College.
